The Rude Boy Story
It Started with Two Words: "Extremely Rude."
He wasn't entirely wrong.
I don't know what she was going to say after that — because I went off. There were f-bombs. There were some other words. It wasn't my finest moment, but it was a long time coming.
On the Way Home, I Almost Took the Safe Route.
I stopped at a small engine shop on the drive home to ask about a job. The owner was ready to hire me on the spot — just needed me to fill out an application. I brought it home, got about halfway through, and stopped.
I crumpled it up and threw it in the trash.
"Rude Boy" Was Born Out of Spite. And a Little Bit of Pride.
Instead of letting "extremely rude" sting, I leaned into it. I thought about those classic 1970s and '80s truck stickers — Rude Boy peeing on a rival brand logo. Every truck had one. It was defiant, irreverent, and a little obnoxious. It felt right.
Named after being called rude by a man in a corporate office. Designed by my mom from a childhood toy. That's the whole story.
The Wrench Has Been in My Hand Since I Was Seven.
I didn't stumble into this. I grew up doing this.
I've been turning wrenches on everything from line trimmers to zero-turns to to cars and full-sized trucks my entire life. Working at John Deere wasn't the beginning of my mechanical career — it was just a chapter. And not a chapter I'll miss.
Here's the Irony.
The man called "extremely rude" by a corporate manager has built one of the most trusted small engine shops in Pitt County — on the back of three things customers bring up over and over again, completely unprompted.
Customers consistently say the same thing: John does what he says, when he says it.
"John is a man of his word. He told me when he would pick up the equipment — and he did exactly that." — Domonic Powell
A 7-year-old Honda mower running like new in just a couple of days. Picked up Monday, delivered Friday, fair price, runs like new. Quick to return calls, quick to follow through. The pattern is consistent enough that people stop and name it specifically — because it's rare enough to be worth mentioning.
"Great service at a fair price. You can't go wrong trusting Rude Boy."
No surprise charges. Estimates that match the final bill. An honest diagnosis, even when the answer isn't what you want to hear. That's the standard here — not because it's a policy, but because it's the only way to run a shop worth running.
"John was extremely accommodating and I will continue to use them."
